Challenge
Our challenges were to provide a unique golf course in one of the most competitive
markets in the country, to provide a golf course or an amenity that would
benefit the Shea Trilogy planned community and to produce a course that
is challenging and fun to play.
Solution
The course was designed to provide all the material needed to raise the housing pads to allow for better views, as well as provide storm water drainage and storage within the golf course. The grades of the housing were moved to complement the movement in the golf course and provide a more natural link between the two. Approximately 30 acres of lakes offer great views and store all storm water drainage. Working closely with the Shea team and Johnson Utilities, the designers used approximately 150 acres of turf (the typical desert course has some 90 acres) on the course and the connecting grassed areas. This approach is a rarity in the Phoenix area and provides a distinctive look and exceptional playability. The course is designed to be fairly neutral on tee shots, but quite challenging on the approach shots. The greens and green complexes provide opportunities for a variety of shots and difficult pins. Roll-off areas around the greens feature an array of shapes and forms that offer additional challenges, which, in this windy environment, are often found by golfers. While the course boasts many lakes, the design intentionally mixes up how the play of each hole interacts with the water.
Result
One of the best compliments we have received is that most golfers will never know how much this course is used for civil engineering related issues, such as storm water storage, earthwork and utilities, as well as views from adjacent homes. Golfers simply appreciate how much green grass and lakes are visible. Most also appreciate the fact that the golf is not dominated by the lakes and that the course is very playable. In fact, we hear that many golfers enjoy playing the course, and that the design positively influences sales for the Shea community, while enhancing its identity.
