Challenge
To improve bunker aesthetics and agronomics, to recapture some of the Stanley Thompson design intent, to provide some additional tees for length and variety, and to add a new set of forward tees.
Solution
Every bunker was rebuilt using Ohio’s best sand—one of the better bunker sands anywhere. The grading for each bunker was reworked to shed water around the bunker instead of into them. Bunker drainage and liner were used to lengthen the useable and playable condition of the bunkers. The bunkers were repositioned to allow for subtle changes and, in conjunction with a radical adjustment to fairway edges, more of the Stanley Thompson design intent was incorporated back into the golf course. Originally the golf course was wide open allowing tee shots to be placed from a variety of angles to approach the greens; this strategy was reestablished in the makeover. At the same time, the look and feel of the bunkers were restored. Additionally, we added back some green in areas to allow for a greater variety of pin locations, as well as improve the use of angles for approach shots.
Result
Everything on this project went according to plan and all challenges were successfully addressed. The members are very happy with the results. The bunkers perform as they should; saving considerable maintenance time that can now be used to manage other course agronomics. Duininck Brothers, Inc., rebuilt the bunkers in a very unique manner—extensive hand work resulted in a great look that will be greatly appreciated by golfers at this beautiful course.
