Born in Austin, Minnesota, it was only natural that Tom would attend the University of Minnesota. After college and an early stint on the PGA Tour in the middle 1980s, he played several different tours around the world before returning to the U.S. and the Nationwide Tour where in 1991 Lehman won three times, was the leading money winner and their Player of the Year, all of which earned him a ticket back to the PGA Tour and the start of a stellar career.
The Scottsdale, Arizona resident in the course of his career as a golf professional has won on some of the world's best golf courses. Among his victories are included wins at the Memorial Tournament (1994), the Colonial Invitational (1995), the British Open Championship at Royal Lytham-St. Annes (1996) and the Tour Championship (1996) at Southern Hills. He has also triumphed at the Casio World Open (1993) in Japan and in Scotland at the Loch Lomond Invitational (1997). He also delighted hometown fans in 2000 when he won the Phoenix Open. Lehman was the PGA Tour's Player of the Year in 1996 and won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average. He was ranked the number one player in the world in 1997. He has been a three-time Ryder Cup team member and was the 2006 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain. Tom also has been a member of three Presidents Cup teams.
All of this experience as a player has offered Tom a sense of what a good golf course is all about and he loves the artistry required to give birth to a great design. He points out Augusta National as an example of the type of golf Lehman Design wants to create. "Not only is it strategic calling for great shot making with a variety of options but Augusta is very, very dramatic in style. That is what we strive to offer."
"I love being able to create great golf," says Lehman. "To me, it's very challenging, most interesting and I never stop learning. I am very fortunate to be working with Chris and I am very proud of our work together over the years. We make a great team."
